HOW TO HELP FRIENDS OF ST. BASIL'S : Many of us in the Yorkville-Hazelton Heritage Conservation District fought at the OMB against the Hazelton Hotel proposal 6 years ago. The Hotel has since been nominated for the worst architecture of the year, but ten 1890 homes were demolished to accommodate it. Then we battled the Mt. Sinai development at 100 Yorkville, and finally the 4 Seasons Hotel & condos at Yorkville and Bay Streets. We lost all the appeals, apparently because Councillor Kyle Rae has c. 90% of the development applications in the City, and he approves of most development.
If you'd like to help the Friends of St. Basil's, just email your letters of objection to all councillors by noon, September 14, 2009, or notify the Toronto and East York Community Counci's administrator that you'd like to make a 5-minute speech to the Community Council on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. Subsequently, sign up as a "participant" at the OMB--we'll notify people how to do it on the website, soon--and prepare a 5-minute speech for the OMB judge. If you have the time to do more, we'd be very grateful for any help. Just email your area of interest/ expertise--internet or website, photography, canvassing, fund-raising, PR & publicity, administrative, legal, urban planning, traffic studies, architecture, heritage architecture, etc.-- along with a resume and 3 letters of reference.
Also write to the LCBO protesting the nightclub proposed at the corner of Hazelton and Davenport Rd., adjoining the Yorkville-Hazelton Conservation District, by Sept. 8, 2009. And please write or address the Ontario Municipal Board by Sept. 10, 2009. Details are available in the HOME section.
