About Save Yorkville

www.saveyorkville.org
is the domain name for the Yorkville-Hazelton Heritage Conservation District.

The Yorkville-Hazelton Conservation District (HCD) was designated by the City of Toronto as a heritage conservation district under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act in 2002, for the   “protection and enhancement of groups of properties that collectively give an area a special character …from the overall historic and aeasthetic values of buildings, streets, and open spaces seen together.”    Designation…”enables the council of a municipality to manage change in the character and quality of the built environment to enhance beneficial or to ameliorate adverse effects on the heritage value of the district.”

St. Basil’s School’s, built in 1928, and now in the heart of the HCD, was individually designated for its cultural heritage value in February, 2002.  There are twenty one other individually listed heritage properties on  Hazelton Avenue; see the list after the Heritage Conservation District guidelines.

Friends of St. Basil’s School are neighbours in the Yorkville-Hazelton Conservation District and heritage supporters concerned that the 26.72 metre high, 5,610 m./ 60,387.5 sq. ft. proposed condominium re-development is incompatible with our heritage district, and would compromise its integrity.   A non-profit corporation about to be registered, its mission is to celebrate, advocate for, preserve and promote St. Basil’s School’s cultural, architectural, and natural heritage for posterity.

The developer is appealing to the Ontario Municipal Board for approval of his proposed re-development.  Legal and professional fees to defend St. Basil’s School and the District may exceed $250,000.00.  Through an agency agreement with the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, an official income tax receipt will acknowledge donations over $25 of individuals, foundations and corporations.  Any assistance is much appreciated.
